John F. Kennedy Jr. remembered in Spike documentary

John F. Kennedy Jr. remembered in Spike documentary
I Am JFK Jr. airs on August 1 on Spike TV
12th July 2016 by April Neale
The late John F. Kennedy Jr. is being remembered on Spike in a new documentary.

Those of us old enough remember the young lad known then as John John, the boy saluting the body of his father, John F. Kennedy, as the horse-drawn caisson carried JFK’s casket in the funeral procession. We watched him grow up and become a handsome man, the perfect blend of his mother and father’s best attributes.

On July 16, 1999, a small plane crash off of Cape Cod killed John F. Kennedy Jr., 38, wife Carolyn Bessette, 33, and his sister-in-law Lauren Bessette, 34. JFK Jr. was piloting a single-engine Piper Saratoga when it went down off at Martha’s Vineyard, their intentions were to fly on to Hyannis Port for the Saturday wedding of his cousin, Rory Kennedy.

Not long after the deaths, the Bessette family sued the Kennedys for wrongful death and settled out of court.

John and Caroline’s “fairytale” marriage was People magazine front cover fodder yet in 2003, a scathing Vanity Fair article alleged their marriage was loaded with red flags, saying Bessette hating the limelight he adored, noting hearsay of her alleged drug usage and JFK, jr’s desire for kids that was not her wish.

The years prior to this sad event, the world watched as a young scion of a family that many regarded as American royalty became a heartthrob and America’s most eligible bachelor bask in the klieg lights of celebrity culture.  He got it and used it to his advantage for his magazine, George.

In the Spike documentary “I Am JFK Jr.”  those who knew him well were famous too. Actor Robert De Niro, supermodel Cindy Crawford, boxer Mike Tyson, journalists Chris Cuomo and Christiane Amanpour along with others share their recollections of the handsome son of one of America’s most beloved presidents and first ladies, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.

JFK Jr. grew up in the golden age of the paparazzi, his private schools and privileged life were shown to us all yet he was quiet, and thoughtful and cared deeply about many issues. Every year that passed, his good looks were becoming more evident and speculation about his love life went into overdrive when he reached 18 years of age. Everyone had a crush on JFK Jr.

It has been seventeen years since his plane crash that killed his wife, her sister and him. Their bodies recovered five days after the crash still strapped into their seats , members of JFK Jr.’s inner circle are opening up for the first time about the friend they lost in this intimate documentary.

The documentary is loaded with anecdotes and personal recollections from many famous and less famous people like his college roommates and his close friends and colleagues from JFK Jr.’s George magazine.

In the film, producers insert great B-roll and vintage footage of young JFK Jr. in the White House and his downtime life with his family, plus moments and rare views of him in the years following his father’s assassination.

You can catch I Am JFK Jr. Monday, Aug. 1 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on SPIKE TV and their will also be a limited theatrical release starting July 20.
