New Republic: Democrats Need Not Fear the NRA Anymore

The New Republic claims the campaigns for the 2014
mid-term elections prove that Democrats need not fear the NRA any longer.
This conclusion is largely drawn from the fact that Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC) voted for gun control in 2013, yet is
currently running slightly ahead of Republican challenger Thom Tillis. Real Clear Politics
has Hagan ahead by 3.7 points.
According to The New
Republic, Hagan's lead proves that "crossing the NRA is
hardly fatal." They claim it also proves that supporting the NRA is hardly
worth it--if you're a Democrat.
To support this, they cite the NRA endorsement of Senator
Mark Pryor's (D-AR) Republican challenger, even though Pryor voted against the
Senate's gun control bill. And the NRA did not endorse anyone in the race in
Alaska, where Senator Mark Begich (D-AK) voted against the gun control his
party supported.
The New Republic misses the NRA's overarching goal of
helping to free the Senate from Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-NV) grip, thereby alleviating a massive gun
control threat and the possible confirmation of more anti-Second Amendment
judges.
By focusing on Hagan's 3.7 point lead in NC, the outlet
overlooks the fact that the other red state Democrat senator who voted for
gun control--three term Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA)--is down nearly 6 points
to her Republican challenger.
