Fashion designer Kenneth Cole sent a tweet at 10:34 a.m. today that set the Twitter-sphere on fire.

It was tweet that many took as flippant at best and an attempt to "sell fashion" at the expense of our troops at worst.

According to the Daily Mail, Cole's tweet was in response to "the phrase 'boots on the ground'" as used by President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry regarding troop deployment to Syria.

Cole tweeted: "'Boots on the Ground,' or not, let's not forget about sandals, pumps, and loafers."

In response Geben Communications's Heather Whaling tweeted: "Mocking war to sell fashion? Really?" And "fashion designer Bradley Scott added: 'Did you catch that tweet from Kenneth Cole. Really disgusting.'"

Cole expressed similar sentiments during the 2011 Egyptian Arab Spring, when he tweeted: "Millions are in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available online @....."

The backlash against Cole's mockery of "boots on the ground" grew to such proportions that he deleted the tweet and apologized.
