On November 15th Attorney General Eric Holder asked Congress to renew The Undetectable Firearms Act (UFA), a law which makes it "illegal to manufacture, import, sell, ship, deliver, possess, transfer or receive" a firearm that is undetectable by scanners.

UFA is currently in force, but will expire on December 9th.

According to Fox News, Holder described 3D printed plastic guns as "an extremely serious problem" and "a very wearisome threat to law enforcement." Said Holder: "We can't have guns in circulation that are not detectable by metal detectors."

Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) have called for an outright ban on 3D printed plastic guns.

Schumer says that 3D printing has made what "was once a hypothetical threat into a terrifying reality."

According to The Wall Journal, the ATF says there are no "known instances of a person being shot with a plastic gun in the U.S." Nor is there an open criminal investigation "involving [a plastic gun]."
