Less than half of the pro-Palestine protesters arrested at New York University last week after refusing to vacate the campus were members of the academic institution, the university said on Wednesday.

Of the 133 protesters arrested on April 22 at Gould Plaza on campus, 65 were students, faculty or other employees of NYU, located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood on the west side of lower Manhattan. It is the largest private university in the United States by enrollment.

"I never thought that as president I would need to rely on the NYPD to secure the safety of our community," President Linda G. Mills said in the statement.

Mills added that several buildings on campus had to be locked down that evening for security reasons.

At Columbia University in northern Manhattan's Morningside Heights neighborhood, Hamas supporters who were not students or staff were involved in violent protests, according to the city's mayor.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, speaking on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Wednesday, revealed that "outside agitators," including one whose husband was convicted for terrorism, played a key role in the anti-Israel protests at Columbia.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said on Wednesday it was unclear how many of the 280 arrested at Columbia were outsiders.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism Rebecca Weiner said at a news conference on Wednesday alongside Adams, that going through the names of those arrested to determine whether they are affiliated with the universities will "take time."

Police have arrested more than 2,000 people during pro-Palestinian protests at college campuses across the United States in recent weeks, according to an Associated Press tally Thursday.

Demonstrations — and arrests — have occurred in almost every corner of the nation. But in the last 24 hours, they’ve drawn the most attention at the University of California, Los Angeles, where chaotic scenes played out early Thursday when officers in riot gear surged against a crowd of demonstrators.

Hundreds of protesters at UCLA defied orders to leave, some forming human chains as police fired flash-bangs to break up the crowds.

At least 200 people were arrested, said Sgt. Alejandro Rubio of the California Highway Patrol, citing data from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Rubio said they were being booked at the county jails complex near downtown Los Angeles. UCLA police will determine what charges to bring.

Later Thursday morning, workers removed the barricades and dismantled the protesters’ fortified encampment. Bulldozers scooped up bags of trash and tents. Some buildings were covered in graffiti.

Tent encampments of protesters calling on universities to stop doing business with Israel or companies they say support the war in Gaza have spread across campuses nationwide in a student movement unlike any other this century.

The demonstrations began at Columbia University on April 17, with students calling for an end to the Israel-Hamas war, which has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to the Health Ministry there. Israel launched its offensive in Gaza after Hamas militants killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took roughly 250 hostages in an attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7.

California Highway Patrol officers poured into the UCLA campus by the hundreds early Thursday. Wearing face shields and protective vests, they held their batons out to separate them from demonstrators, who wore helmets and gas masks and chanted: “You want peace. We want justice.”

For hours, officers warned over loud speakers that there would be arrests if the crowd of more than 1,000 people did not disperse. Protesters and police shoved and scuffled as officers encountered resistance. With police helicopters hovering, the sound of flash-bangs pierced the air. Police pulled off protesters’ helmets and goggles as they made arrests.

Police methodically ripped apart the encampment’s barricade of plywood, pallets, metal fences and dumpsters, then pulled down dozens of canopies and tents. The number of protesters diminished through the morning, some leaving voluntarily with their hands up and others detained by police.

The law enforcement presence and continued warnings contrasted with the scene Tuesday night, when counterdemonstrators attacked the pro-Palestinian encampment, throwing traffic cones, releasing pepper spray and tearing down barriers. Fighting between the two sides continued for hours before police stepped in. No one was arrested, but at least 15 protesters were injured. Authorities’ tepid response drew criticism from political leaders, Muslim students and advocacy groups.

By Wednesday afternoon, a small city sprang up inside the reenforced encampment, with hundreds of people and tents on the quad. Demonstrators rebuilt the makeshift barriers around their tents while state and campus police watched.

Some protesters said Muslim prayers as the sun set, while others chanted “we’re not leaving” or passed out goggles and surgical masks. They wore helmets and headscarves, and discussed the best ways to handle pepper spray or tear gas as someone sang over a megaphone.

The crowd grew as the night wore on and as more officers poured onto campus.

Ray Wiliani, who lives nearby, said he went to UCLA on Wednesday evening to support the pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

“We need to take a stand for it,” he said. “Enough is enough.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom denounced the delayed law enforcement response on Tuesday and UCLA Chancellor Gene Block promised an investigation. The head of the University of California system, Michael Drake, ordered an “independent review of the university’s planning, its actions and the response by law enforcement.”

“The community needs to feel the police are protecting them, not enabling others to harm them,” Rebecca Husaini, chief of staff for the Muslim Public Affairs Council, said during a news conference Wednesday.

Iranian state television carried live images of the police action at UCLA, as did Qatar’s pan-Arab Al Jazeera satellite network. Live images of Los Angeles also played across Israeli television networks.

Israel has branded the protests antisemitic, while Israel’s critics say it uses those allegations to silence opposition. Although some protesters have been caught on camera making antisemitic remarks or violent threats, protest organizers — some of whom are Jewish — call it a peaceful movement to defend Palestinian rights and protest the war.

President Joe Biden on Thursday defended the students’ right to peaceful protest but decried the disorder of recent days.

On Thursday, California Republican leaders blasted university administrations for failing to protect Jewish students and allowing protests to escalate into “lawlessness and violence.”

They’re calling for the firing of leaders at universities such as UCLA and Cal Poly Humboldt and are pushing for a proposal that would cut pay for university administrators.

“We’ve got a whole lot of people in these universities drawing six figure salaries and they stood by and did nothing,” Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher told reporters. “There does need to be accountability.”

Meanwhile, protest encampments at schools across the U.S., were cleared by police — resulting in more arrests — or closed up voluntarily. In New York, those included the City College of New York, Fordham University, Stony Brook University and the University of Buffalo. Others nationwide included the University of New Hampshire in Durham, Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, and Tulane University in New Orleans.

A college professor from Illinois said he suffered multiple broken ribs and a broken hand during a pro-Palestine protest on Saturday at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Bystander video shows the arrest of Steve Tamari, a history professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He seems to be moving in to take video or photos of protesters being detained when multiple officers roughly take him down.

Tamari said in a statement Thursday that it was “a small price to pay for Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza.” Campus police referred questions to the university’s communications department, which did not respond to a request for comment.

Upcoming graduations have become a concern.

Florida’s state university chancellor ordered campus presidents to take whatever steps necessary to prevent disruption of ceremonies. At the same time, University of Minnesota officials reached agreement with protesters not to disrupt commencements. Similar agreements have been made at Northwestern University in suburban Chicago and Brown University in Rhode Island.

Meanwhile, a professors group at Columbia University condemned school leadership on Thursday for asking police to remove protesters in what the group called a “horrific police attack on our students.” Officers burst into a building Tuesday, breaking up a demonstration that had paralyzed the school.

U.S. college campuses have become a flashpoint, with school leaders facing intense scrutiny over their handling of allegations of antisemitism and the right to free speech. The presidents of Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania resigned following questions at a congressional hearing about whether calls on campus for the genocide of Jews would violate the school’s conduct policy.

N.Y. House Members Demand Columbia President Resign (Connecting the Dots: Yale University, Columbia University, Palestine (Hamas) & Soros Funding, All Networking)

https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/columbia-university-minouche-shafik-protesters/2024/04/22/id/1161990/

The entire slate of New York Republicans in the House of Representative have called for the resignation of Columbia University president Minouche Shafik amid pro-Palestinian protests — and criticism of leadership at the prestigious Ivy League school.

Led by Rep. Elise Stefanik, the 10 lawmakers signed a letter claiming Columbia's campus is roiled by "anarchy" and that Shafik has failed her obligation to provide a safe learning environment.

Hundreds of students have occupied the Manhattan campus for three days to protest the Biden administration's response to the Israel-Hamas war — demanding a cease-fire — and to urge Congress to stop military aid to Israel.

More than 100 demonstrators were reportedly arrested Friday on Shafik's orders. At least 45 have reportedly been arrested at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, in similar protests.

"The situation unfolding on campus right now is a direct product of your policies and misguided decisions," the New York lawmakers' letter to Shafik said. "Based on these recent events and your testimony in front of Congress, we have no confidence in your leadership of this once esteemed institution.

"The ongoing situation that has unfolded is a direct symptom of your continued lax enforcement of policy and clear double standards. While the rot is systemic, the responsibility rests squarely on your shoulders. It is time for Columbia University to turn the page on this shameful chapter. This can only be done through the restoration of order and your prompt resignation."

Demands for Shafik's resignation have piled up from both sides of the aisle, The Hill reported, with Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., making similar demands.

According to The Hill, many of the protesting students are Jewish, and protest groups have fought back against characterizations of their demonstrations as antisemitic.

"We are frustrated by media distractions focusing on inflammatory individuals who do not represent us," protest leaders wrote in a statement Sunday. "Our members have been misidentified by a politically motivated mob."

In her own statement, Shafik said she is "deeply saddened" by the campus protests.

"Let's sit down and talk and argue and find ways to compromise on solutions," she urged.

Besides Stefanik, other New York GOP lawmakers who signed the letter were Reps. Nicole Malliotakis, Claudia Tenney, Nick Langworthy, Mike Lawler, Anthony D'Esposito, Nick LaLota, Brandon Williams, Andrew Garbarino, and Marc Molinaro.

NPR Editor: Bosses Squelched Hunter Laptop Story

By James Morley III    |   Wednesday, 10 April 2024 07:31 PM EDT

https://www.newsmax.com/politics/hunter-biden-laptop-trump/2024/04/10/id/1160524/

A 25-year veteran reporter for NPR has called out his bosses at the network, saying they abandoned their journalistic standards in regard to the Hunter Biden laptop story because fair coverage might have aided then-President Donald Trump in his bid for reelection.

Writing in Bari Weiss' The Free Press on Tuesday, business editor and reporter Uri Berliner took issue with how his superiors at NPR made the network "an openly polemical news outlet serving a niche audience."

"The laptop was newsworthy," Berliner wrote. "But the timeless journalistic instinct of following a hot story lead was being squelched."

Just prior to the 2020 presidential election, news first broke of a laptop that then-candidate Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden had left at a computer repair store in Delaware. The laptop contained information about the Biden family's alleged influence peddling, in addition to nude photos and email exchanges involving Hunter Biden.

Fifty-one former intelligence officials signed a letter in October 2020 declaring the laptop and its contents "Russian disinformation." It has since been proven to be authentic.

According to Berliner, NPR's managing editor for news at the time said, "We don't want to waste our time on stories that are not really stories, and we don't want to waste the listeners' and readers' time on stories that are just pure distractions."

Berliner wrote: "The laptop was newsworthy. But the timeless journalistic instinct of following a hot story lead was being squelched. During a meeting with colleagues, I listened as one of NPR's best and most fair-minded journalists said it was good we weren't following the laptop story because it could help Trump."

The veteran reporter also cited the Trump-Russia collusion allegations and the origins of the coronavirus as other instances where the news organization failed to offer diverse viewpoints.

"An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don't have an audience that reflects America," he wrote.

Rove: Trump Jan. 6 pardons pledge a ‘critical mistake’ (Connecting the Dots: Karl Rowe, MSNBC & Soros Funding, All Networking)

THE HILL

BY MIRANDA NAZZARO - 04/04/24 10:20 AM ET

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4574204-rove-trump-jan-6-pardons-pledge-a-critical-mistake/

Republican strategist Karl Rove urged Democrats to “go hard” at former President Trump’s rhetoric surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, calling the former president’s pledge to free imprisoned rioters a “critical mistake.”

“If they were smart, they’d take the Jan. 6 and go hard at it. And they would say, ‘He wants to pardon these people who attacked our Capitol,'” Rove said told MSNBC’s Ari Melber.

“One of the critical mistakes made in this campaign is that Donald Trump has now said, ‘I’m going to pardon those people because they’re hostages,'” Rove said in the interview, which aired Wednesday. “No, they’re not. They’re thugs.”

Trump said last month that his first act if elected to the White House would be to free the imprisoned Jan. 6 rioters, whom he called “hostages.” The former president has expressed sympathy for those charged in connection with the insurrection on numerous occasions and spoke last year at a fundraiser organized for Jan 6. defendants.

“Why Trump has done this is beyond me,” Rove said, criticizing Trump for appearing in videos with those who assaulted police during the riots.

More than 1,350 people have been charged with federal crimes in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack, when swaths of rioters stormed the Capitol to stop Congress’s certification of the 2020 election results.

Rove — the ex-White House deputy chief of staff for former President George W. Bush — ripped into the rioters’ actions, telling Melber, “What those people did when they violently attacked the Capitol in order to stop a constitutionally mandated meeting of the Congress to accept the results of the Electoral College is a stain on our history.”

“And every one of those sons of bitches who did that, we ought to find them, try them and send them to jail,” he added.

The strategist explained that while he is Republican and doesn’t want a Democrat in the White House, he cannot condone the former president’s actions.

“We’re facing as a country, a decision … and you know, everybody gets to make it … as to what kind of leadership we’re going to have,” Rove said. “And to me, it is a mistake on the part of the Trump campaign to allow the president’s impulses to identify himself with the people who assaulted the Capitol rather than people who stand for law and order.”

Trump is currently facing federal and state criminal charges in Washington, D.C., and Georgia over his alleged efforts to overturn the election results after losing to President Biden in 2020.

The Hill reached out to Trump’s campaign for comment.

History

Founding and early years

The company was founded as a newspaper in 1994 by Democratic power broker and New York businessman Jerry Finkelstein,[7] and Martin Tolchin, a former correspondent for The New York Times. New York Representative Gary L. Ackerman was also a major shareholder.[4] The name of the publication alludes to "Capitol Hill" as a synecdoche for the United States Congress and government generally.
